January 26, 2020 - Practice Shoot with Emily Butler
About a year ago, I found a photographer, Alessio Albi, on Instagram and instantly fell in love with is portraits. I was fascinated by his use of light and editing style but it was his use of motion and double exposures in photos with Yulia Rose and Chudnovskaia Tanya that really grabbed my attention. So, I asked Emily Butler to help me practice this technique.
The plan was simple - head downtown around sunset and find a simple wall to shoot against. I wanted to find a spot where the sun was shining at her back so I could use it as a strong backlight.
Naturally, plans go to shit. Emily ran out of gas right before the shoot and we had to run to the gas station. Fun fact, gas cans are $13. Another fun fact, don’t throw the gasket away that comes with the can because apparently you need those now….
We managed to get some gas in Emily’s car and with about 15 minutes left before it was too dark, we captured a few photos.
I really like the way they turned out but they are still pretty flat and lack color. We ran out of time and couldn’t find a spot with good sunlight so I tried to add color in the highlights and shadows as well as darken the background to separate Emily from the door and foliage but that can only do so much. Next time, I will try to utilize more sunlight and position Emily in front of a brighter background.
Thanks again for helping me with this Emily!
