Asheville Weekend Trip

ASHEVILLE, NC

NOVEMBER 2- 5, 2020

I recently took a road trip up Asheville with a few friends. We hiked around, walked around the city, and saw a crashed airplane. It was a good weekend. These are some pictures from that trip.

Point-N-Shoot

I’ve been trying to take pictures on my Sony point-n-shoot camera. I love the way it takes pictures. This trip was a good way to experiment with that.

5D Mark IV

Of course I brought the 5d. I spent a lot of money on it so ain’t no way I’m leaving it home. These are photos from that camera.

Random Thoughts

I noticed it was easier capturing moments with the point-n-shoot. I didn’t have to worry about checking exposure, finding focus, etc. I simply turned it on and took a picture. It allowed me to capture the more “intimate” moments of the trip like Juan sleeping or everyone standing around the crashed airplane.

The 5d allowed for some epic pictures though. I love everything from the lookout tower. It has a really good dynamic range so I was still able to pull a lot of information out of the shadows even though the sun was shining straight at my camera. However, it’s a big camera. And the act of taking a picture on it - looking through the eyepiece, picking a focus point, adjusting exposure, focal length… - is a lot. It’s not actually a lot. That whole process only takes like a second but that second can be the difference between getting the picture and missing it. The size of it pretty calls out, “Hey, I’m taking a picture” to everyone around.

I’ve always followed the idea of, “it’s not the camera, it’s the photographer.” By this I mean, you can take a great picture with any camera as long as you know what you’re doing. While I’m still learning, I found this trip as a great way to test that idea. It almost seemed like the point-n-shoot freed me from the thought process behind taking a picture with the 5d. It allowed me to simply capture what was happening. I will definitely be using it more moving forward.
